Before the construction of Manawar Semalda Langoor Ajandikoti road under PMGSY. Rajinder (Rama) of Neshupur Mohalla of Langoor village has a small agriculture farm and two buffaloes. He used to sell his agricultural products and small quantity of milk in the village at a very low rates. But after the construction of the road under PMGSY in November 2002, local buses started plying through this road. This has changed the life of Rajinder as he startsed selling milk and milk products on a regular basis to Manawar town by using local bus services. He also changed his agriculture-cropping pattern as he slightly shifted towards cash crops in the form of vegetables, which he also started selling to the town. Uttar Pradesh

District : Moradabad
Block : Chajllet
Village : Koorameerpur

Koorameerpur village was established about 500 years ago. The village had very poor connectivity to the state highway at Kanthroad. There were no motorised vehicles by which people had access to places outside the village. The economic condition of the people was not very good. After the construction of the road, there has been change in the traffic flow of the region.. Movement of goods and traffic of these five villages now goes through this village. Before the construction of the road, sugarcane was sold to the factory at Rs.5 less than the procurement price per quintal (being the transport cost deducted by the factories). Now the farmers deliver the cane directly to the factory and income levels have increased. There has been tremendous increase in the public transport facilities in the form of horse-driven cart, auto rickshaw, etc. Five persons who are involved in the above transport work have got permanent income generating employment. Land prices along the newly constructed roads have increased. There have been more forward--backward linkages with the village at one hand and markets and growth centres on the other.

Orissa

District : Angul
Block : Banarpal
Road : Badakerjang to Tukuda
Village : Badakerjang

Under PMGSY only a part of the road from Badkerjang to Tukuda has been upgraded. Out of the total distance of 10 Km., only 3.927 km of kutcha road has been upgraded to RCC road. During the FGD, the villagers of Badakerjang village expressed that prior to road construction light commercial vehicles were rarely playing from Angul to the village, but after the road is constructed, a minimum of 8 to 10 vehicles makes 10-15 trips to the village everyday. This helps the villagers in commuting to Angul, Talcher in search of wage employment. It also has been revealed from the FGDs and key informant's interviews that a large number of villagers are working in the NALCO and Coal Mines under the contractors as Wage Earners and the construction of road which has helped the vehicles to commute to the village is contributing a lot for the poor villagers to commute and work under the contractors at Talcher (Coal Mines & NALCO) and are earning decently for their survival. Further as pointed out by Dhaneswar Rout and Durga Behera, of village Badakerjang number of delivery cases in hospital has almost doubled due to the construction of road. Previously due to lack of transport and communication facilities, almost 80% of the delivery cases were done in home without presence of health worker. Now situation has improved a lot. The construction of road, connectivity & communication has improved significantly, which has resulted in creating more employment opportunities for the people in the villages located adjacent to the roads.

Himachal Pradesh

District : Kangra
Block : Panchrukhi
Village : Tarhed
Road name : Padhiarkhar Jandpur to Trehad road

Mr. Kalyan Chandra is residing in this village since birth and at present is selling vegetables. His place of work i.e. the mandi is 4 kms. away from his residence. Every day he had to go to the mandi twice to take another lot in the second time. This was creating a lot of discomfort and was finding it very tiring and difficult to continue. After, road construction under PMGSY, seeing the potential (early mover) he decided to get rid of the vegetables business and started a new business of furniture making by opening a shop. The idea was propelled because of the high demand of locally made good furniture and easier movement of the people from nearby villages. Another reason was easy availability of raw material i.e. wood and the furniture could be easily put on display near the new road. He installed the machine (Aara Machine) to give shapes as desired. Now lot of village people approach him not only from the same village but adjoining villages because of his good work. The productivity has also increased. He has also provided employment to 2-3 helpers. His income level has also gone up and his life style has also changed. He is now able to send his children to the private school for better education. So we see a change in the employment pattern from this case study and the kind of benefits which can accrue.

Tamil Nadu

District : Thanjavore
Block : Thanjavore
Habitation : Marungai
Name :Venketesh

Venketesh is 16 years old and is illiterate. He is a physically challenged boy. He is unable to walk since his birth. Due to his disability, he was not able to do any work and was generally confined to his home. He used to be very depressed and had little to look forward to.

However, Venketesh is completely a different boy after the PMGSY road was build. As a result of good connectivity provided by the PMGSY road, the frequency of NGOs visiting the habitation increased. One such NGO presented Venketesh with a tricycle. Venketesh now is independent enough to move on his own and is more confident about himself. This has improved his self-esteem and he is thinking of starting his own small establishment like a tea or a grocery shop. He is trying for a bank loan. The provision of all weather roads under PMGSY has brought a new ray of hope in his life.

West Bengal

District : Barddhaman
Block : Shantipur
Village : Saguna
Name :Shushanto Banik (weaver)

Weaving sarees is one of the main occupation of the villagers. Earlier the weavers used to carry the sarees on their cycle to the nearly local market and sell them. Sushanto Banik also was no such exception. He would sell the sarees in Shantipur and Phulia and his wife would weave them. Many times, he complained that the sarees would get spoilt, especially during the raining season. But he did not have any other option than carrying them on his bicycle.

After the upgradation of the PMGSY road from Bagachra to Sreerampur, he carrries the sarees in a van. Four villagers have pooled in money and bought a small van to carry sarees to the market. He comes home early and thus has time to weave himself. Now the husband and wife weave the sarees together. Shushanto goes twice a week to the Phulia bazar to sell the sarees. He says that he can devort many more hours on weaving. Earlier much of his time was spent on travel. He makes more sarees and thus gets more money.

The road has helped the weavers in more ways than one. With connectivity, the travel time to the markets has also reduced. The time spend on collecting the raw materials for making sarees has thus decreased considerably. Connectivity of PMGSY roads has helped in increasing the average household income of Shushanto and other beneficiaries.
