The Road Surface is kept above the Ground Level to prevent weakening of Sub-Grade due to Ground Water and to ensure that the surface water does not damage the road. Therefore, the Embankments are constructed with suitable earth (soil). In Hills, Formation and Cutting are required to be done carefully.

Rampur-Fakhruwal to Rampur Road, PUNJAB	Bhalubhora Road, ASSAM

The formation of the road is constructed with suitable soil in layers with due compaction and camber. The compaction of the soil is done at Optimum Moisture Content (OMC), adding water to soil wherever necessary. Vibratory rollers give better compaction. The top level of the formation is kept at least 0.5m above the ground level.
