National Rural Road Development Committee

Since the entire get up of the village will undergo a great change for the better if the internal main road is black topped, it is suggested that a willing entrepreneur may be encouraged and permitted to open cooking gas distribution outlets at such bus terminus in return for financing the creation of above mentioned bus shade / shop.

5.9 Road Crust

Under this programme we have to build roads, which will last for atleast say 10 years. It is, therefore, necessary to provide a well defined crust, suitable for site conditions. The first step will be to decide the traffic intensity to be assumed for the design. It is suggested that we may assume traffic intensities depending on the population of the village by using the figures of actual traffic intensities on existing black topped village approach roads in the vicinity.

There is a wide variation in topography, sub soil, rainfall and construction material available at various places in the country. It is suggested that the CRRI should provide type cross sections for roads for

different site situations like black cotton soil area, deserts, hilly areas, marshy areas etc. This could be standardized and then used by the local officers.

5.10 Drainage

It is a well known adage that the three most important things for the durability of roads are drainage, drainage and drainage ! It will, therefore, be very necessary to pay full attention to sub-surface drainage and surface drainage. The cross sections of the roads must provide for the side drains and sub-surface drains whenever required.

5.11 Arboriculture

After the roads are constructed, income generating trees like mango, amla, neem etc. can be planted along the edge of the road land by the contractor according to provisions in the estimate and contract. Low cost tree guards can be provided to protect these trees. A scheme can be drawn up whereby local youth can be employed on nurturing and maintaining such tree. Necessary equipment like cycle mounted small tanks for watering trees can be provided to the persons entrusted with the job. The income from such plantation can be shared by the local bodies with such persons engaged in maintenance of the plantation.
